How a Step-Up SIP Builds a Larger Corpus

A step-up SIP (also called a top-up SIP) starts with a fixed monthly instalment and increases it by a set percentage every year, 10% is the common default, broadly in line with a typical annual increment. Rather than deciding each year whether to save the raise or spend it, you commit to the increase in advance. If the concept is new, begin with our guide to what a SIP is.

The mechanics shape how the money grows. Early instalments stay invested the longest and compound for the full tenure, while each later instalment compounds for a shorter period. The money added in the final year grows for only about a year. Even so, an annual step-up builds a far larger corpus than a fixed instalment, because contributions keep pace with your income. A ₹10,000 monthly SIP stepped up 10% a year at a 12% CAGR grows to about ₹83 lakh over 15 years, against about ₹48 lakh for a flat ₹10,000 SIP, though the step-up route also invests roughly ₹20 lakh more in total.

Two practical effects follow. First, stepping up can keep your investing ahead of inflation, which a flat instalment slowly falls behind. Second, since returns are expressed as a CAGR, this calculator applies the same monthly compounding used across the site, so the figures stay comparable. To check the fixed-instalment alternative, run the same numbers in the flat SIP calculator; if you already know the corpus you want, work backwards with the reverse SIP calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a step-up SIP?
A step-up SIP raises your monthly instalment by a fixed percentage at set intervals, usually once a year, so the investment grows with your income. A ₹10,000 SIP with a 10% annual step-up becomes ₹11,000 a month in year two and about ₹23,600 a month by year ten. The calculator above lets you set the starting instalment, the step-up rate, the expected return and the duration.
Is a step-up SIP better than a flat SIP?
A step-up SIP builds a noticeably larger corpus than a flat SIP with the same starting amount, about ₹83 lakh vs ₹48 lakh over 15 years in the example above, because you invest more each year as your income rises. The trade-off is that the monthly commitment keeps growing, so it suits someone whose earnings can reasonably be expected to increase. A flat SIP is simpler and easier to maintain through a pay cut or career break; the SIP calculator models that case.
How is a step-up SIP taxed?
Each instalment is a separate purchase, so units bought in different months have different holding periods. On redemption, equity gains on units held over 12 months are long-term, taxed at 12.5% above ₹1.25 lakh of such gains in a financial year, while units held under 12 months attract 20% short-term capital gains tax. Stepping up does not change these rules; it only means later instalments start their 12-month holding clock later.
How much does a 10% annual step-up add to the final corpus?
Over long horizons, a meaningful amount, because each annual increase compounds for the rest of the tenure. In the 15-year example above, the step-up plan finishes with about ₹83 lakh against ₹48 lakh for the fixed instalment, while the extra money invested over the whole period is only about ₹20 lakh. Formula & Mathematical Approach

Step-Up SIP simulates the growth of an investment where the monthly deposit increases by a fixed percentage annually.

Monthly SIP in Year y=Initial Monthly SIP×(1+Step-up %100)y−1\text{Monthly SIP in Year } y = \text{Initial Monthly SIP} \times \left(1 + \frac{\text{Step-up \%}}{100}\right)^{y - 1}
Future Value=Sum of monthly compounded contributions over all years\text{Future Value} = \text{Sum of monthly compounded contributions over all years}
Show Plain Text / Excel Formula
Investment (Year y) = Monthly SIP * (1 + Step-up % / 100) ^ (y - 1)
Future Value = Compounded monthly using the annual step-up increment.

Key Assumptions

  • The step-up increment is applied exactly once at the beginning of each new year.
  • Compounding is calculated monthly using the equivalent CAGR rate.
  • Rate of return remains constant over the duration.
  • All contributions are made at the beginning of each month.
  • Tax rules are estimated based on regulations last reviewed in June 2026.
