Building a Child's Corpus for Education and Marriage

A child corpus calculator converts a goal stated in today's prices into its future cost and solves for the investment needed to meet it. On the defaults, ₹50 lakh needed for a two-year-old by age 21, 6% inflation lifts the target to about ₹1.51 crore over 19 years. Reaching that takes a monthly SIP of roughly ₹18,700 at a 12% expected return, or about ₹17.6 lakh as a lump sum today.

Education and wedding costs do not inflate in lockstep with the general basket. School and college fees have historically risen faster than headline consumer inflation, so fee-heavy milestones deserve a higher assumed rate than the 6% default. Time, meanwhile, is the cheaper lever: starting the same ₹50 lakh goal when the child is five instead of two raises the required SIP from about ₹18,700 to about ₹23,300, because three years of compounding are lost. Start early, and the monthly amount stays manageable.

Think in milestones and separate pots. College at 18-21 and a wedding in the mid-20s are different horizons, so they suit different investments and different risk levels. The education planner targets the first, the marriage planner the second, and the goal planner handles any other target, all using the same inflation-adjusted maths. Move each corpus towards safer instruments as its date nears, and increase the instalment when income rises rather than waiting years to revise the numbers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much should I invest monthly for my child's education?
Two examples from this calculator show the range. A ₹50 lakh target for a two-year-old, needed at 21, takes about ₹18,700 a month at a 12% return after inflation lifts the goal to roughly ₹1.51 crore. A ₹10 lakh college corpus for a newborn reaching 18 takes about ₹4,000 a month, because the horizon is long and the target smaller. Enter your own fees and dates for a precise figure.
What inflation rate should I use for education costs?
This calculator defaults to 6% (the general assumption), but education fees have tended to outpace headline inflation: the education planner on this site uses 10% for that reason. At 6%, education costs double roughly every 12 years; at 10%, roughly every seven. For a fee-heavy goal like a professional degree, testing both rates shows how much cushion the plan needs.
Is it better to start early or invest more later?
Starting early is usually cheaper. In the default example, delaying the start from age two to age five raises the monthly investment for the same ₹50 lakh goal from about ₹18,700 to about ₹23,300: an increase of roughly a quarter for a three-year delay. Later contributions have to make up both the missing years of compounding and the inflation that has accrued in the meantime.
Can I invest for my child in the child's name?
You can, but the tax treatment usually makes it neutral: income earned on investments gifted to a minor is generally clubbed with the parent's income and taxed at the parent's slab, with only a small statutory exemption. Investing in a parent's name while earmarking the money for the child's goal keeps things simple, and the corpus can be transferred when the child turns major if that suits the plan.

Formula & Mathematical Approach

Models the growth of a child's future support fund (for education, marriage, or starting a business) and required contributions.

Future Goal=Current Cost×(1+Inflation100)Years\text{Future Goal} = \text{Current Cost} \times \left(1 + \frac{\text{Inflation}}{100}\right)^{\text{Years}}
Required Monthly SIP=Future Goal[(1+i)Months−1i]×(1+i)\text{Required Monthly SIP} = \frac{\text{Future Goal}}{\left[ \frac{(1 + i)^{\text{Months}} - 1}{i} \right] \times (1 + i)}
Show Plain Text / Excel Formula
Future Goal = Current Cost * (1 + Inflation / 100) ^ Years
Required SIP = Future Goal / (SIP Compounding Factor)

Key Assumptions

  • Long-term compounding growth compounds monthly.
  • Level monthly contributions are maintained.
