Reverse SIP: Working Back to Your Required Monthly Investment

A SIP tells you what a fixed monthly investment grows into; the reverse SIP calculator starts from the other end (the corpus you need, the date you need it, and the expected return) and solves for the instalment that gets you there. On the defaults, reaching ₹1 crore in 15 years at a 12% CAGR needs a monthly SIP of about ₹21,000. Change the target or the horizon and the required instalment recalculates instantly.

The required figure is far smaller than the target divided by the number of months, because compounding does much of the work. In that ₹1 crore example, about ₹37.8 lakh is invested over 15 years and roughly ₹62 lakh of the final corpus is growth. Give the plan more time and the arithmetic improves sharply: stretching the same ₹1 crore goal to 20 years almost halves the required SIP, to about ₹10,900 a month. The CAGR you enter matters just as much as the years, so use a realistic long-run assumption rather than a bull-market number.

Two checks before you rely on the result. The target must be entered as a future amount, because this calculator does not inflate today's costs, either enter the expected future price, or run today's number through the goal planner, which adds inflation automatically. And once the instalment looks affordable, test it from the forward direction in the plain SIP calculator or the step-up SIP calculator; if a large sum is available today, compare routes in the SIP vs lump sum comparison or the reverse lump sum calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a reverse SIP calculator?
It finds the monthly SIP needed to reach a target corpus by a chosen date, given an expected return. A regular SIP calculator does the opposite: it projects what a fixed instalment becomes. The reverse version suits goal planning, where you start from the amount a goal needs and work backwards. For the default ₹1 crore target 15 years away at 12%, it returns roughly ₹21,000 a month.
How much SIP do I need to reach ₹1 crore?
It depends mainly on the time available. At a 12% CAGR, ₹1 crore needs about ₹21,000 a month over 15 years, but only about ₹10,900 a month over 20 years: the same target with five more years of compounding. Because the answer is very sensitive to the assumed return, treat 10-12% as a planning range for Indian equity funds rather than a promise.
Does a reverse SIP calculation adjust for inflation?
No, it treats the target as a future amount. If your goal is stated in today's prices, inflate it first or let the goal planner do it automatically, since that tool lifts the target by an assumed inflation rate before solving for the investment. At 6% a year, a goal 10 years away costs about 1.8 times its price today.
SIP or lump sum, which needs less money for the same goal?
A lump sum, because the entire amount compounds from day one. For the ₹1 crore target in 15 years at 12%, a one-time investment of about ₹18.3 lakh does the job, against roughly ₹21,000 a month, about ₹37.8 lakh in total, through a SIP. The comparison assumes the lump sum is already available; the SIP vs lump sum comparison covers how the two routes behave in practice.

Formula & Mathematical Approach

Calculates the monthly Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) required to accumulate a target corpus.

i=(1+Return Rate100)112−1i = \left(1 + \frac{\text{Return Rate}}{100}\right)^{\frac{1}{12}} - 1
Required Monthly SIP=Target Corpus[(1+i)Months−1i]×(1+i)\text{Required Monthly SIP} = \frac{\text{Target Corpus}}{\left[ \frac{(1 + i)^{\text{Months}} - 1}{i} \right] \times (1 + i)}
Show Plain Text / Excel Formula
i = (1 + Return Rate / 100) ^ (1 / 12) - 1
Monthly SIP Required = Target Corpus / ([((1 + i) ^ Months - 1) / i] * (1 + i))

Key Assumptions

  • Contributions are made at the start of each month.
  • Expected annual return rate is constant.
  • Target corpus is in nominal terms.
